IBBY Palestine in Mexico Congress

IBBY Palestine participated in the successful IBBY 34th Congress in Mexico.

We were represented by PBBY President Jehan Helou and Executive Secretary Afaf Abu Nahleh Harb. The theme of the Congress was Reading as an Inclusive Experience - All Means All. Around 70 IBBY sections were represented in the Congress and more than 800 attendants.

The program of the Congress was rich with prominent speakers: writers, illustrators, academics and experts on the subject. In addition to a variety of interesting workshops and parallel sessions.

The celebrations for the Winners of the 2014 HCA Awards and IBBY-Asahi Reading Promotion Award were very festive. Speeches of the winners the Japanese writer Naoko Uehashi and the Brazilian illustrator Roger Mello well as the interesting presentations of the representative of the winners of the reading award, who are Children’s Book Bank, Toronto, Canada and PRAESA, Cape Town, South Africa/ are posted on IBBY Webpage. www.ibby.org

Moreover, there was an interesting presentation of the 150 Honor List 2012-2014. The winners form Palestine are:
• Sonia Nimr for her book ‘Rihlat Ajeebah fi al-Bilad al-Gharibah’ for the quality of its writing.
• Abdullah Qawariq for the title ‘Mukhtar abu Dinien Kbar’ for the quality of its illustrations.
• Maya Abu Alhayyat the title ‘al-Ta’er al-Ahmar’ for the quality of its translation.
The publisher of the three books is Tamer Institute for Community Education.

PBBY representatives attended IBBY GA. Ten executive committee members were elected for the coming two years. Wally de Doncker a prominent writer and a Child Rights advocate was elected to be the president of IBBY 2014-2016.
PBBY and most of the IBBY sections delegates were pleased when IBBY announced in the opening session the launching of IBBY Gaza Appeal to support the destroyed and damaged libraries in Gaza. A flyer of the Appeal was distributed (enclosed).
